1985 aod problems
i have a 1985 F-150 with an AOD tranny. i recently had to rebuild it because it was slipping in 3rd and 4th. when i took it apart i found that the washer spring was broken. i thought that this was the problem because it was not letting the clutches apply. so i replaced all the clutches and the washer spring and put the tranny back into the truck. but the tranny still wont shift into 3rd or 4th. the only difference is that before i rebuilt it the tranny was slippin in 3rd and 4th and now it isnt slippin it is just that now the tranny wont shift. i know that the cluches arnt slippin cause i can power brake it with no problem. if any boby has any ideas of what it could be i would apperciate it

AODs don't have passing gear linkage. They have a TV linkage that controlls the pressures within the trans. Failure to adjust this properly will cause the trans to shift wrong or burn up from too low a pressure depending on which direction the cable is off. Did you replace the seals when replacing the spring?

i am pretty sure the TV cable is OK. when i replaced the spring i didnt replace any seals. that is all i did was take out the snap ring, take out the broke spring, then i put the new spring in. i didnt even move the piston in any way. when i rebuilt it i only replaced the cluches and the OD band. i took the valve body off but i never took it apart. do you think one of the check ***** could have fallen out?

Sorry for the late response. Been working on my truck all weekend. Check ***** won't fall out of the valve body unless you removed the plate. Other possible problems could be valve body not torque down properly allowind leak by. If you wasn't real clean with everything then you could have sticking valves in either the valve body or a sticking govenor it the 1-2 shift is at high rpms.
