hi everybody i have a 93 ford ranger last week i took my ranger 2 walmart 4 new tires when i left there i didnt think of it but my abs light was on and it still is 1 week later and now i have no brakes at all and my brake pedal goes 2 the floor what should i do????????
I had a problem that was kind of like the one that you are having. My antilock brake light came on and when i tried to bleed the rear brakes no fluid came. So... My brake system had air in the lines and my brakes no longer worked. I replaced the antilock brake modulator (the dealer called it the skid contoler) for like $100 and then bled the brakes and everything was great. The modulator was seized up and wasn't allowing any fluid to the rear brakes
I own a '90 ranger with only rear antilock brakes. I am not sure if your problem is the same as mine, but thats what i did to fix it. It is an expensive part but a very easy replacement if your have some line wrenches and know how to bleed brakes.
I have a 91 Ranger that experienced the ABS light coming on as well. I would first check out the fluid level of your brake system. Being low on fluid will trip the light.
I would then go back to Walmart where you got the tires and complain. If you started having this problem after they installed the new tires, then they may have done something to the lines/ or brakes.
if your having a problem bleeding your rear brakes, wouldnt it be more of a wheel cylinder problem? i had the abs light on for quite a while, but that was because i broke a bleeder valve off and my back brakes didnt work properly ( if at all) i changed the wheel cylinders and everything works now. the price came out to be a little less than 20 dollars.
My rear brakes would not bleed because the antilock brake modulator was seized closed. Therefore no fluid could pass it and no fluid would come out when bleeding the brakes.
I had the same problem with my 91 4x2. I have a mechanic friend who came over and found it right away. A switch for the light is actually in the master cylinder and will stick. He reached in with a piece of wire and wiggled it and it went out. I stilll comes on every now and then, especially when it sits for a long time. It eventually goes out. I believe that switch is also supposed to detect low brake fluid, so there may have been a problem when they bled your brakes. In my case, I need to change my brake resevior, which I may do one of these days.
