When I turn the key to turn my truck off it spins rather freely and will not shut off. My truck is a 95 F-150. I have replaced the cylindar w/key and I have the same results. I can turn the truck on, but cannot shut it off.
Sounds like the set pin or clip isn't attached that locks the cylinder in place. Was the truck recovered from a theft? if so they could have broken the housing for the cylinder.

on the Ignition Lock Cylinder there should be a little ball on the side when you press on it, it will move in towards the center on the lock that lines up with a small hole in the housing for it. To lock it in place. Some vehicals have a clip at the end for not to pull out easy. And some have a notch at the end to lock into a little rectangle pin to release the steering wheel. if it's not lined up properly it will spin. I found it easiest to install with battery termanl off turn key to run position and insert . then turn the key to the off postion and the ball and end pin should line up. hope this helps
has anyone considered just bypassing the ignition "key" system altogether if they fail?
i.e. leave it there, but reroute a hidden button switch to the ignition wires so you'd reach into a secret place and just push the button to start it?
you'd want to leave the ignition switch there so it'd look normal.
just wondering. mine is a little playful and i'm considering just re-routing it altogether.

I did that on an old ranger I had, very easily done and a good theft deterent. I actually hid the switch on the floorboard with an old headlight dimmer switch.
could it possibly be you're installing it incorrectly galanthias?
datche, smokey,i have soooo definately thought about doing that! and soooo badly want to. . . can you guys help me figure out how?
i'm guessing you could just rip the console apart, find what wires/circuit is open/closed using the ignition switch, and then trace them down to somewhere or cut/re-route them somewhere and put in a little spring-loaded switch of any-type from your local radio-shack or car parts place.
i've installed hidden kill switches, but not moved the ignition circuit.
seems like it wouldn't be much trouble though.
You could always wire it like a Lincoln I saw in the 70's. Came into the dealership from the factory and when you turned on the radio the starter would ingage. Turn on the lights and the horn blew. Seems like someone at the factory was mad at Ford and stuck a straight pin through the wiring harness and taped it up. That was fun to find.
Ok, I believe I found the problem, and to everyone I am 99.9% sure i installed the cylindar correctly.
I took out the ignition switch and the bar or whatever it is the connects between the switch and the cylindar slides freely. I am pretty sure this is the problem, now i ma trying to figure out how to remove the steering wheel and get to it to make sure.
The rod does not seem to tie into the key ignition anymore. If I turn the key then the rod should slide and this does not happen. Now I am not a mechanic and I honestly have no idea of how this part of a car works, but I think this is how this system works.
