Two questions:
first, whats the commonly accepted method of replacing cab mounts (front)?
second, I put an F600 inst panel in my truck, what speedo cable will work between it and my C6? ? Did the big Fords use a C6?
You can replace the cab mounts with exact replacements. You must be a welder to do that. Or you can do what I did and buy some JC Whitney bolt ons. You just remove the cab mounting bolt, jack up the cab, slide in the mount, drill some holes and bolt on. Make sure to prime/paint/rubberize them first. They'll rot out again if you don't. There was a thread discussing how to find them within the past week. Search the forum and you should be able to find it.
Yeah, I wish I would have done the weld-ins. You end up with big ole bolts sticking through your firewall and floorboards with the bolt-ins. If you're a welder I'm sure your good to go. Just remember to paint the hell out of them and cover them in that rubberizer stuff.
Would you recommend cutting out the old mount? Or do most just slap the new one over the top and buzz it on? Seems like it would be better to cut the old one out, but I have never done this before, don't know what can of worms that would open. . .
I don't know. But I think the new mounts are the same as the old ones so I'm guessing you'd have to cut out the old. On mine the mounts were only rusted where they contact the frame so the metal above where they welded to the body was still OK. You're just gonna have to figure that out on your own. Do a search in this forum for cab mounts. I know this has been discussed a thousand times.
I just did the driver side floorboard and cab mount. If you'd like I could post the pics I took in my gallery, it wasn't very hard to do. Cutting out the old metal was the hardest part. I used replacement sheet metal from a well known vender.
You have a MIG welder so it shouldn't be a big deal to do it right and replace the bad metal instead of covering it up with an insert.

Before you start the job inspect the floorboard and if it is rusted out the job is a lot easier to cut the floorboard and replace it at the same time as the mount. The big problem with removing the old mount is removing it from the floor as it is spot welded to the floor and you are sure to put holes in the floor.
As for the speedometer cable, any speedometer shop can make a cable if the old C6 cable will not fit.

Have fun 64 Bolt. I'm doing my lft front cab mount now. I picked a replacement up at the junky, 5$. Nice and solid. Anyway, I drilled out the spot welds, which I learned from this forum about 6 months ago. I'm drilling my truck now. I'll MIG the newer one in and paint and undercoat well. Not very hard, just takes time and a bit dirty. I'm playing w/ 71 F100, 87 efi, long bed, overdrive[ crown vic] Seeya
