I have the same truck. I have an aluminum cap (Century)with no windows on the side (glass rear). I am a big fan of aluminum caps because they don't crack and they are light enough to remove by yourself so you can get your motorcycle back there!
I like tonneau covers because they keep stuff dry and are easy to remove when you gotta carry something tall. but they offer no "protection" from the elements if you want to hang out in the bed. (see below)
I like caps because they keep stuff dry but can be a chore to remove when you gotta carry something tall.
So I got a Soft Topper folding "cap". I get the benefits of a cap without the hassle of removing it all the time and still have something to keep the bed dry. I go to the beach a lot and it makes for a nice plece to sit since I can roll up the sides and back. Plus, I have a Bedrug in the bed, so it makes for a nice place to nap. the kids ride back there on the slower back roads. (I installed an old minivan seat with seatbelts.)
If you want versatility, this Softopper is the bomb.
Only bad thing is that you cannot secure the contents of the bed.
I'm putting a Knapheide Knap Kap on my new 05 SD. Had one on an 00 SD... pretty much like the ARE units, except built out of solid steel. Weight with full rear doors (replaces tailgate) and side toolboxes is about 425lbs. Paying $2,960 installed, painted black, and clearcoated.
I bought the Leer XQ . Very nice looking on the truck . Paid $1489.00 including tax , carpeted head liner , factory paint matched , remote lock that works with trucks key fob , removeable sliding cab window and magnetic dome light that turns on and off when the rear door is opened . That price was also installed .
I have an ARE Z series (matches the roof line) on my LB CC. Lots of room, paint matches (dark stone), very good fit. Very expensive ($1800). Happy with the product. I have two utility trailers for tall/rough stuff.
Lear XQ or XL??? Browning edition. Gun vault mounted to the roof, carpeted liner, sliding window. $1400 installed. two hurricanes last year and not 1 drop of water entered the bed. Pics in gllery. Last truck had an ARE. Could not keep water out of the bed. Windows leaked, 2 tubes of sealer later, still leaked and looked bad.
I've owned Leer all my life until the Snugtop I just got for my '05. I did look at Leers, and they come with some great accessories, like remote key fob access and 12V power points, which Snugtop didn't. I ended up with the Snugtop b/c of construction and looks. Surprisingly, the top-of-the-line Snugs and Leers are similarly priced, or were at the RV show where I purchased. If you want a super tough (but heavier)shell, check out Snug. Mine does have an overhead light but it's one of the cheapest, poorest constructed POS I've seen in quite a few years - it's quite a joke. Overall, I'd do it again though.
I have the Leer 122 topper, it is the tallest they make. I can put 3 motorcycles in with the doors closed. I also have the bedrug and it's pretty nice. I never take mine off.
I bought a Snugtop Supersport for my new truck. The paint is a perfect match and the fit is great. The quality seems very good except for the cheesy light. I replaced that with a ten dollar RV dual bulb fixture.
