Starter questions

Have a '93 F150, 4.9 w/ 5 speed. 311,000 miles. Replaced starter once before. When out tonight to start, the relay and solenoid just clicked. Checked the 3 month old battery, seemed OK and the cables were tight. Removed starter, wires looked good. With positive to "solenoid tab" and negative to starter, solenoid engaged and spun rather slowly. Positive bolt doesn't seem to make any difference in speed when hooked up to the positive battery. Does anybody know how to check a starter. I recall that it was fairly expensive and don't want to waste the money, because I'm not convinced it is it. When I put everything back in the truck, I just get the clicking again.

Thanks for your input!!!

Most stores like autozone and Pepboys will test it for free. You can lay it on the ground and hook the positive lead on a set of jumpers to the start terminal on the starter and the neg terminal to the cas of it and try it that way. put yoour foot on that bad boy before You touch the positive cable to it though, they have bunches of torque and will go rolling off on ya when they spin, lol. I had one make it all the way across a 28x32 garage once snapping off a mounting ear in the process. Hopefully this will help. Also try this. My 91 F150 had the same problem for a while and I replace the battery cables on it. Corrosion had gotten in between the cables and the termionals and was causing my woes. startrd like a champ after that.

Brad,

Took your advise and took the starter to Advance Auto Parts this morning. Found out that it was a bad bendix. $130.00+ later, the old girl is up and running. Going to look for 350,000 miles now. Thanks for your help.

Cool Deal, The price on starters has doubled since I bought on last, I haven't bought one in about 5 years though. lol. those trucks just seem to last forever huh. I had a 90 F150 with 175,000 mles on it that still ran strong and didn't leak or burn oil or anything. Gotta love it.
