The original 6.0 with the original software (with pilot injection) made a BRAAAAAAAAP! sound on startup. It was a little frightening at first, but it came to be known and loved as the signature sound of the 6.0. You could spot another 6.0 owner from 1/4 mile away in a parking lot when you heard that sound!
But alas, the reflashes that ditched pilot injection also got rid of that sound. No more BRAAAAAAAP. So the truck that makes that noise still has an early flash with pilot injection, and the one that doesn't has a newer flash with no pilot injection.
I have '03 that has never been reflashed, and it still BRAAAAAPS, KSNAAAAPS, TCHATCHAACKS on start up, and I love it! It generally starts pretty quickly, without much starter run time.
My 03 started quicker than the new 05, seems to take forever....for the Glow Plug wire indicator to go away on my dash now.....it also does sound different than the early 03's.
My 03 still makes that BRAAAAAAAAAP sound at start-up, even after the flashes. Never any problems, starts quick hot or cold. Takes about six seconds for the glow plug light to go out when cold, depending on outside temp, but six is the longest I've ever counted.
