I recently installed a coolant filter on my 96 about 2,000 miles ago. I used the supply and return on the heater core. I just noticed I have a leak at the water pump gasket, not the weep hole. Just wondering what you guys think caused this, cleaner coolant or a water pump on it's way out? Should I just replace the gasket and go on my merry way? A water pump is not in the budget only if it is a must. Truck is heating and cooling just as normal. Any input would be great! Thanks Dominic
Several times I have flushed cooling systems on older cars for friends (with normal water, mind you), filled it with 50/50 and had them come back a week later because it was leaking somewhere. Only thing I can assume is that running CLEAN water through it dislodged a big hunk of crud that was plugging a leak. You probably don't need a water pump, but you probably do need to pull it and re-seal it. As a side note, after you take the belt off, shake the pulley up and down, if it has any play in it, might as well spring for a new water pump while you have the old one off, 'cause you're gonna need one soon anyway... They're not that much, from what I remember.
I found a waterpump online for $187 though I can't remember where. I couldn't wait for delivery so I spent the extra buck at Napa which ran about $250. Doesn't sound like your problem is as immediate as mine was so do a few searches. It took me a while to locate it.
