I have a 1987 Ranger XLT with a 2.9 and 175000 miles. Recently it began stalling and would not start. I took it to a shop and they put a new fuel pump in and it ran fine for a while. Now it stalls hot or cold, backfires after it stalls but won't start until it seems I give the truck a break. I have pulled the following codes from the truck, following the directions from this(awsome) forum; 53,87,33 18. I know what they read but am not sure what exactly to do.
since you are getting code 87, my guess is that you need a new fuel pressure relay. it is about $10 and take a couple of minutes to change once you have found it. look around the fuse box under the hood. this is what it looks like only smaller.

I replaced the relay but that wasn't the solution. Replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the stalling stopped for now. Ran the truck and the heater hose ruptured so that will be new on the truck. Thanks to this forum for the info here.
Ok my truck stalled last night coming home from work. It started up just fine and it went probably a mile down the road but then it stalled like it did before i put in the new relays and regulator. I got it running again and it drove about 10 feet and then it wouldn't start again. What could i be now?? I was thinking maybe the inertia switch went bad and it cuts off the flow to the gas and that would be the reason why it runs great and then stalls out of nowhere. How often do these things go bad..
It Could Possibly Be A Defective Fuel Pump Again. When Your Trying To Start It(when It Won't Kick Over) Have Someone Press The Shrader Valve(locateon The Fuel Rail, Looks Like A Tire Valve). Fuel Should Spray Out If Its Got Good Pressure From The Pump. The Inertia Switch Could Be Removed And Splice The Wires Together To Test If Thats The Problem. If It Isn't The Splice The Switch Back In To Be Safe.
replaced ect sensor, removed front of throttle body, really heavy carbon build up, used cleaner and hooked everything up. Filled the whole neighborhood up with black smoke and had to give the old girl a rest because she would't start and I was choking to death.
I had a stalling problem on my '98 3.0. It stalled about a dozen times, finally started and then let me sit 6 miles from home and wouldn't run. Turned out to be the MAF sensor on mine.
