I am trying to replaced my factory speakers with after market speakers. And I really don't know how to remove the door panel. I know they have plastic clips holding it on and I don't want to break them. So maybe ya'll can help me with this.
You don't say what year, but I just had to R & R mine (92 4D XLT) and there were 3 screws, one up on the window pillar and two right above the door handle. Also, remove the the lock **** and lock the door to get as much clearence as possible. After that, I had to _gently_ pull on the bottom of the panel to "pop" the catches loose (they look something like plastic screws with very closely spaced threads, but they aren't actually threaded - it is simply a friction fit). I then lifted the panel up slightly to clear the locking rod/post. Then, unplug whatever needs unpluging EXCEPT the power windows if you have them. I simply left that alone and propped the panel up. Good luck with the speakers.
Just did that on a 2000 Mounty for the same reason-replace door speakers. It's an easy procedure. The 2000 has only 2 screws to remove which are under the arm rest. Remove the plastic trim cover at the handle, just pry it out. Then with a stiff putty knife (I used a small clawed pry bar with masking tape around the end to prevent scratching paint) pry the ribbed press pins out. Start with the one in the lower left panel corner. From there you'll be able to pull the panel away from the door enough to see where the next pins are. Put the tool as close to the pin as possible so you're actually working against the pin head and not the panel-less risk of damaging the panel. Work around the panel at the bottom and two sides to remove all the pins (they'll stay attached to the panel). Once all the pins are loose, pull the panel away from the door just enough to feed the door handle through the opening. You'll see what I mean when you do it. Once the handle is clear and not interfering with the upward movement of the panel, gently work the panel up and out of the window sill. There is a plastic "hook" on the inside surface of the panel that fits into a square hole in the door. If you were to pull the panel straight back from the door, you would break the plastic hook like I did. The panel is formed and fitted to the various angles in the door so you kind of have to work it this way and that to get it free of the door. The panel on the arm rest that has the power window and lock switches in it slides from the panel towards the door once the plastic lock tabs are released on the back side of the panel. You'll see em. Unplug the remote mirror control if you got it and the panel is free from the door. If some of the pins got mangled during the removal process, you can find some replacements at PepBoys or Advanced Auto. I actually found some at Lowe's in the fastener department! I could have removed both front door panels aaand done a tire rotation in the time it took to type this! Good Luck.
