Question Magic number for 6.0s ?

OK, I have read quite a bit of posts on this forum and also on the forums for the 6.0s and the 7.3s. I am in the process of looking for a 99-04 used F250. What I have read about the 6.0s really points me in the direction of a 7.3, however, my wife is pretty adamant about getting a truck with less than 50,000 miles. While there are some out there, it is kind of hard to find a 7.3 with less than 50,000. I know that many of you 6.0 owners out there love your trucks and have never had the first problem, but having just come out of a lemon chevy, I am very skeptical of my possibilities when it comes to buying a 6.0 and getting screwed again. All that said, what I am wondering is if there is some magic number that I should be looking for if I end up going with a 6.0. For instance, if the 6.0 has about 40,000 miles on it, is it safe to assume that the truck would be one of the more dependable ones, or does the mileage even matter? This truck would be one that I would plan on keeping for a long time, and I just want to make sure that I make the wisest decision possible. I really appreciate any help.

P.S. I'm definitely going diesel, so I am really not interested in any opinions on the gas engines. Thanks.

Welcome Robert and good, well thought out question !

I REALLY don't think milage is the measure - I mean someone could have one that was SO much trouble it was in the shop and didn't GET any miles...

I have an early 03 build 6-oh and to 46K+ hard miles thus far it has been a CHAMP....
but with ANY used car, you have to wonder - why did they trade in a year old or two year old car ?

While I normally get tired of a car about the 2 year mark... I've not on this one.... it gets GREAT mpg, has GREAT power, great 'appeal', great warranty (1ook extended) and future upgrades can keep it that way...

check the oasis report for any vin number you are interested in...
see what type of service has been recorded for it...
and check back here for "opinions" (there's LOTS of those !)

Did you check the classified section ? I'm getting a new 05 6.0 and selling my 01 7.3 .I don't know if I'm doing the right thing or not because like you said its only got 42k on it so why sell it. But the 05 is ordered and whats done is done. The 7.3 is a very good engine and I havn't had any problems with it. I hope the 05 is as good .

Good Hunting

My only words of wisdom:
Drive it- Inspect it (especially the underside) & tow with it (if possible) including the engagement of the tow/haul mode... If it passes those tests then run the oasis.

BTW my 03 6.0 has 48,500 miles and I've had The 6.0 Grin the whole way!

try running a price comparison on a used vehicle with a NEW one. Same options etc. thru KBB.COM I did this and with the diesel option the price difference wasn't much. By the time the dealership got done with all the rebates etc. the payment was LESS for the new 04 vs a 2 year old vehicle. So we went with the new. No problems to inherit, not wondering if it was broke in right, etc.

My 2001 is still under 22,000. I only use it 2 or 3 times a week, most of the time less than 100 miles during the week. The only reason I'd even think about getting rid of it is to go bigger. But thats not going to happen, no need to at this time. So the amount I do use it makes the projected $3.00 a gallon still seem cheap. (I'm trying to delude myself, you still notice it in your pocket regardless)
