I am thinking of parting ways with the old faithful mid 70s Chevy stepside. I am looking for something a little more current that I can drive every day. I am considering a clean low mileage 95-96 Bronco in the 7-8k range. Has anyone set up their Bronco for plowing? What features should I look for? WHat upgrades should I make? How well did yours perform?
This was just a topic recently in here. You wouldn't even need to search for it as it's probably no more then 3-4 pages back. Personally, I say no, but you'll see some disagree. But I guess if I were going to, I wouldn't do it to a 95-96, only because I'd rather beat up an old one. Again, that's personally though....check a few pages back, you'll find it.

I figured the Bronco frame was the same as a short bed F150. Actually, the F150 would have more problems because it is so light in the back and would need weight added to the back. I figured I could add timbrens to stiffen up the front end and displace some of the weight.
I'm really getting some mixed signals. I posted the same thread on a plowing site and the Bronco came highly recommended as a plow truck. They do advice heavy duty front springs and a transmission cooler though. Any other thoughts?
This may not even matter but I figured I'd toss the thought out there...I know my 96 had a front crumple zone built into the frame. That might be something you'd want to reinforce with some plate before plowing - might be something worth checking in to. Someone on the site might have some 1st hand experience.
The newer half ton trucks (80 & up) aren't meant for plowing. It's very hard on them. The frames just aren't up to the prolonged stress. It will do it, but don't expect it to last more than a few years. I hate to say this, but your mid-70's chevy is a lot stronger than a Bronco is. They just don't make em like they used to.
I agree with jdmorg, though - a nice, late model Bronco is just too nice to beat up with a plow.
If you do end up going that way, make sure you have the E4OD, a large tranny cooler (temp gauges would be a good idea, too) and heavy duty front springs.
