302 Block castings

302 Block castings

Does anyone know what the "X" that is cast into my 302 roller block means? I am rebuilding a 302 roller that I believe came out of a '94 Stang. it has like 3 X castings on each side in the valley under the intake. TIA

I guess maybe I asked a stupid question? The guy I bought the block from tried to tell me that somehow the "X" casting was a good thing...I didn't let it affect how much I paid for it but I was just curious.

You did right--------- Only someone who's an engineer for Ford's engine casting plant would be able to possibly tell you for sure why those X's are there.

I think the roller blocks got the X's in the lifter valley?

It could also be way to show what shift casted the block, i.e. X 1st shift XX 2nd shift, XXX 3rd shift. Just a thought.

They could have been put there to prevent cracking. Sometimes you see different designs on engines like raised dimples or x's in certain areas. I assume these are probably for strength purposes.
