Almost Spring here in Phila.PA (if the weather will ever break!) so I am thinking about the anual checkup/tune-up/inspection for my E150 351 5.1L Club Wagon...
I did the plugs, cap, and wires last spring, had one hell of a time getting to the #1 plug, basically located over the right front tire, but just about impossible to get to!!! Not sure if I ever got the plug tight enough or even the wire boot for that matter!! That's my first question, does anyone in this fine forum have tips on how to get to this plug?!
Also, I have only changed the tranny fluid once, well over 50,000 miles ago, no real problmes (knock on wood (my head)). I was thinking of just adding some Lucas tranny conditioner, but just trying to top off the tranny fluid with the way the tube is set up almost parallel, another pain even with a long funnel, any tips or tricks on adding tranny fluid?
If pouring slowly into a long funnel doesn't work. Try jacking the front end up or putting it on ramps.
I've never had a problem with just a funnel. A little slow, but it worked.
I picked up a new funnel a few months ago that looks perfect for the tranny. Top half has a valve and holds about 2-3 cups worth. Bottom half is made up of plastic tubing about 1 1/2 ft long. Haven't used it for the trans yet, but the tubing looks like it would slip right into the fill tube.
DiscountAutoParts has a product for about $3.00 that screws onto standard quart and gallon (with supplied adapter) bottles that includes about 12 inches of clear tubing. Once you use it, you will wonder how you ever managed without it. Most excellent for squeezing differential fluid up into pumpkin!

50,000 is probably overdue on the tranny fluid change. I'm not sure what they recommend, but I try to get it done every 20 to 30,000. I've just been having my regular shop do it and it runs less than $100 for a flush, change, and additive. Compared to a rebuilt tranny, its a deal. My E150 (5.0 liter) now has 162,000 and no transmission problems to date, thankfully!
Thank you all for the great and useful info!! I will hit the local part store in search of a longer funnel, I'm still a little hesitant about the tranny fluid change, I heard somewhere that mileage well over 100,000 is better to leave put....
Also, I just might wimp out and let the local inspection station tackle the plugs while she's in for inspection...
Thank You all again!!!

50K is the recommended replacment for trans fluid in moderate to severe usage. you can go 100K for light to normal use.
