'92 transmission problem

Greetings,

I have a '92 F150 4x4. It has about 5k miles on a rebuilt transmission, which performed flawlessly until a few weeks ago when I was forced to ford (no pun intended) a few flooded streets during the rains we've been having here in Cali.

I've been getting some harsh upshifts since, they range from swift kick-in-the-pants harsh to get-hit-by-a-train-in-the-butt harsh. This only occurs randomly, and usually goes away after I put the trans in neutral (while moving) and back into drive.

My mechanic thinks it may be the neutral switch, but he hasn't seen (felt) it happen because each time he drives the truck it behaves perfectly. He also said that it was a common problem with Ford trucks of this vintage... I guess my question is have you guys heard of this happening before? I don't want to pay $200 to have the neutral switch replaced only to find out that it was something entirely different.

Thanks for all input,

-R.

trans problem

Hello.

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum initially, I misread the guidelines.

I've driven Fords for years and never had a problem like described above. Usually what I get eventually is slipping on upshifts into overdrive, but never the harsh shifting I'm excperiencing now. I also spent a few hours searching this forum yesterday and couldn't really find anything that described my problem. My mechanic thinks it's a common issue, I'm flustered...

Regards,

-R.

I would hvae the tranny flushed real good. You may have contaminated it with some water while fording.

Hi Andym,

Yeah, that sounds like a possibility. However, I took the truck to a transmission shop on Saturday when the shifting got worse to the point where it was happening several times each time I drove the truck. The owner of the shop got under the truck and manipulated the neutral switch (I think he just wiggled it around some if that's possible - I don't even know where exactly it's located on the tranny) and it's gotten better since. Now I'm only occasionally getting a rough upshift from first to second when taking off at a moderate pace. That would speak for the neutral switch theory, no?

Thanks for the input so far,

-R.

bob here...check wiring harness to tranny for corrosion, clean and lube connection.
If it is wet- use blow drier to dry out. see if improved. is this e4od? if so it is big harness next to linkage....also check tranny for ground strap.
