i just bought a 93 f150xl 5.0L and i drove it home then i pull in my driveway and it stalls so i try to start it again and i have no power
the only power i have is when i turn the key back the cd player flickers but wont stay on when i pull the lights on it kills the cd player or if i open the door it kills it i checked all fuses and replaced 2 but that didnt help I have a test lamp and volt meter i am just not shure were to begin
i do have 2 - wires coming off the battery and 2 positive the one negative goes to ground and it is good and the other goes to the wiring harness and the positive goes to the solonoid which does have power and the other into the wiring haRness i did not try jumping the solenoid because i dint think that would be the problem any way can someon help me out or direct me to a article or tutoriol on how to find a short? or bad ground or whatever?
they battery is fine it has a full charge i wouldnt think a dead silinoid would prevent daytime running lights intirior lights odometer volt gauge etc. i am thinking it might be the ignition switch possibly is there a way i can hotwire it or something to eliminate that theary?
the battery is 100% good it starts my other truck and after that i put it on the charger and it has a full charge i am telling you it is not the battery plus i put my other truck battery in and it did the same thing
put the battery back in. if your connections are dirty use some sand paper to clean them.
jump the solenoid with a pair of pliers with the key turned off. from the postive battery cable at the solenoid to the keyed starter wire (thin red wire). yes it will prob spark but at least you will know if the battery has enough juice to turn the motor over.
go to the fuse box. try to find anywhere in the fuse box that is getting 12 volts with the key off. pull some fuses out and try. this will tell you if your getting 12 volts TO the fuse box or not.
if you are getting 12 volts to the fuse box try taking a fuse out for something that is keyed like the radio. pull the fuse out and check to see if there is 12 volts there when the key is turned on. if there isnt then there prob is something wrong with the ignition switch or wiring to or from it.
It's either bad battery cables or lousy connection at the battery terminals.
Battery cables can corrode internally. They look good on the outside, or near the battery, but after so many years of hot/cold cycles the insulation cracks and lets water in. Then they corrode and don't conduct electricity. New cables are about $10 a piece at a parts store.
