I was reading an article in a Hot Rod magazine from 1952 (I'm WAY behind on my reading) that Ford (who else?) made 10 experimental aluminum flat-head V-8's in 1940. They were tried out as aircraft engines, but I guess the steel (not cast iron) sleeves had problems. There was a picture of a full-dress one on the front cover, possibly the only remaining one. They were 357 lbs., about 140 lbs. less than stock. I would have put this in the flat-head forum, but not many people pass through there.
