Much to my dismay the tranny (c6) in my not so new 79 f150 supercab has issues with going into Drive it has a 460 in it. the other day i was reading a bronco article in here about swapping an automatic overdrive transmission in place of the c6 style transmission , seeing as I want this Truck for hwy Driving and long distance touring I am very interested in doing this swap the article boasted improvements of Fuel economy as much as 33% So i was wondering where can i find one of theese Tranny's and or has anyone done this Swap ?
well the way to do this is to get an adapter that changes your "big block" bell housing patter to a newer modular bell housing pattern. the problem is the new aod tranny's just wont handle the torque the our motors put out. now i have seen ppl that buy beefed up ones and it has worked but i still dont have faith yet. if u want to do it there are several places that u can get a beefed up trans. i would recomend trying a nv4500 (think thats right) its a manual that can handle the power and is a 5spd overdrive. but thats my $.02
You don't need an adaptor if you get an E4OD made for a 460. There were thousands and thousands of them made, so there should be plenty around.
You will need a computer to make it shift, either a stock one or an aftermarket one. I've heard that you can find one at www.baumannengineering.com, but I've never used one of those.
thanks a lot you all gave me a lot of
Good info ill Keep you informed on what i do i think ill look for an E40d Trans and get a custom install for the electronic shift controller
