Fake Tilt Wheel

I have an 89 F250 w/ a 351W and C6, 150,000 mi. It is obvious that I don't have a tilt steering wheel, however there is so much play in it I can move it up and down (not much side to side though). I haven't had a chance to look at the repair manual yet but I imagine there is some sort of universal joint in there that is worn out. Has anyone made this repair? Is it difficult, and will the parts be dealer only? The wheel also has cruise control on it. This situation bugs me from a saftey standpoint. Thanks group, your input is appreciated!

I would suggest that you remove the trim panel from the dash below the wheel and inspect for loose mounting bolts, broken brackets, etc... In other words, find out where its loose, and take it from there.

Fake Tilt Wheel

Well guys and gals, this is a bit embarrassing. Yes, I do have tilt steering. When I first got the truck (used) it looked like it did, but I never bothered to see how it worked. That little stick signal lever does tilt the wheel. I'm use to a big ole separate lever doing the job. It seems the play up and down is acceptable (at least to me) now that I know it's a tilt. Thanks!

Fake Tilt Wheel

My 1980 has a tilt wheel and it doesn't have any play. A guy I work with has a late 80's F250, and his steering column/wheel was loose too. He investigated and found a cast pot metal assembly was broken-he figured probably from people grabbing the steering wheel to boost themselves up in the truck.

Thanks Franklin. I believe that is the situation that I face. People must have used the steering wheel to help boost them in. My seat shows signs that they slid out of it a lot too. Had to reweld it. The play in the wheel isn't bad enough to warrent ripping everything apart and repairing it. Maybe a little down the road. I'll repost if I repair it.
