Transmission Fluid

How often do yall change your transmission fluid?? I just recently changed the front and rear differential lube and was curious how often the transmission fluid needs to be changed. My f-150 has 82,000 and i bought it used about 15,000 miles ago and have not changed it since then.. besides that it could be 82,000 miles old for all i know. Is there a way of looking or smelling the fluid to see if it is old?
Thanks,
John

If it smells burnt, then it's not a bad idea to change it. Even if it seems ok, it's not a bad idea to change it anyway, as it allows you to establish a starting point for future changes.

I have always changed the fluid every 30K miles and have never had a problem. I have over 109,000 miles now. I also use synthetic. When I drop the pan, it is always clean!

I have a 4.2 and the recommended transmission oil is Mercon V. I brought my truck for an oil change to the dealer and I noticed that the oil they used is not Mercon V but a synthetic one. I asked them if they placed the correct oil and they said yes. Would I trust them?
