I have an 81 Class 3 ambulance built on a E303 frame.
in my effort to get it started again, i replaced the batteries (2) with new ones, but now when i turn the key it just clicks once and won't even pretend to start.
I engaged the starter about a month ago in an effort to start it and ended up killing the batteries.
I have power to all the lights, the radio and all other functions. I just can't get it to engage the starter.
I had a similar problem last year and it turned out to be the neutral safety switch on the side of the transmission. This switch prevents starting the engine in gear. Now, it's possibly preventing you from starting at all. You could try to start the engine by bypassing the switch using the starting relay terminals. If it starts, then you've pinpointed the problem.
Statrer solinoid was my problem. Connections can become loose or rusty. New one costs $5.00. Easy swap, just make sure you tighten everything, including battery conncetions.
Single click usually means not enough juice is getting through. Repeated clicks could be arcing across poor connections or a short in the starter.
As always check all the grounds and as the others have said try replacing the starter relay. You should also check all the battery cables as well they may be shot. I realy don`t think its the neutral safty switch because it shouldn`t have clicked at all if that was the problem.
