tranny swap
i have a 6.9 in my truck w/ 4spd, i bought a zf 5 from a 7.3, for the swap what are the parts i will need.
1. will the 7.3 flywheel work on a 6.9?
2. will i need the driveshafts or will the ones i have w/4spd work on 5spd?
3. anything else?
The 7.3 flywheel is probably a dual mass deal you do not want.
I would change the clutch, throw out bearing and pressure plate since they are so hard to change later.
Since you said drive shafts I am assuming you have 4x4.
There are two models of ZF 5 tranny (S42 and S47) in four configurations (bell housing intergral and not intergral) (gas or diesel)with 4 different gear ratios (Low gear (S47 is 5.72, 5.08,4.14)(S42 4.65, 5.72) and reverse (S47 5.24,4.66,3.79)(S42 4.35,5.24) is where the differences is biggest, overdrive is either .76 or .77 on all of them) . So the driveshaft question is hard to answer. The non intergral bell housing is very rare in our application, so that gets rid of several choices.
As far as the driveshafts, did you pull it out of another truck with the same wheelbase as yours? If you did, measure the driveshats in that truck and the ones in yours.
If not, if your ZF 5 has the intergral bell housing, measure from the transfer case flange to the front of the bell housing, and then compare to your T-19 measurements.
Your 1345 transfer case will bolt up to the ZF 5.
You may have to move the cross member depending on which transmission you have. The only other thing I can think of you may have to adjust is the length of the transfer case shift rod. If your truck and the one it came out of are the same wheelbase, and the transmission is a different length than yours, I would think hard about getting the driveshafts as they are probably cheaper than getting yours remade to the correct length.
Sorry for all the confusion, but you asked.
If you want more or different info I will try to help.

so i can use the 6.9 flywheel, will it make any noise somewhere i read about binding or something.
i have the s47, with 4.14 low, for drive shafts truck was same wheelbase.. i don't have a transfer case on tranny yet but i measured from bell housing to back of tranny where transfer case bolts to and i think they are the same length tranny. so it should work out fine i think right?
thanks again dave, have you done this swap, i thought i read somewhere you have. what setup did your have to begin with and then go to, and with what parts?

But I have decieded to go for a six speed instead.
It will be a lot more dollars and work, but it will be closer to what I want in the end.
The 5.79 low gear and the extra gear between low and direct drive will great for towing big loads in the mountains. Plus the oil pump and extra big gears look like it will serve me much better. (and that .72 overdrive with my 33" tires and 3.55 gears is going to put the fear of Ford in a few Dodges around here)
I still have my T19 till I get a bit more time to tear the truck down. With work and snow season here right now I can not afford to be without a truck and have a snow storm move in. Very strange weather this year in WV.
As far as the clutch goes, if you have an external slave cylinder now, and the ZF has an external slave cylinder, you should be good to go. If the ZF has an internal slave cylinder, you may need to swap clutches. I never got into that, as everything I looked at was external.
I have watched a couple of guys do that 4 speed to 5 speed swap.
For a couple of them it was a cake swap.
For a couple of the others I can not post what they said about the swap in this forum.
And one guy had a power take off to run a roll back tilt bed. I would not wish what he went through on my worst enemy.
Another thing that had me concerned is the ZF 5 S47 is only rated for 472 ft lbs of torque.
