What's the weight of the boat & trailer? What is your friend using now to tow the boat?

Welcome to FTE!!!

uhh i think the boat weighs around 4400? possibly more. we use right now either his 1979 f250 or his dad's 2004 dakota w/ the 318. the '79 doesn't exactly get the best gas mileage w/ a lift and 33's. dad's truck is nice but wondering if the 4.0 would save us some $$$ on vehicle fuel considering the boat has a 50 gal. tank on it

Off-hand I'd say no. I had an '02 XLT with the SOHC V6 (210hp) and tow package; with my 3780# rig (had it weighed) hooked on her tail plus 4 people and lotsa gear, she struggled even on moderate hills. After I traded for my '04 XLT with V8 and tow package, MUCH better. I assume the trailer has tandem axles; does it have surge or electric brakes?

Until you find out what your rear end ratio is (maybe a dealer could look it up), it might be better to hold off on any mods.
