Throttle Control Valve???
My Mom's 97 Ex (4.0 SOHC) has been having trouble with idling lately. When it starts it sometimes it will surge up to 1500 rpms and stay, other times its starts normally. Its died on her several time sitting at stoplights. I cleaned the MAF and IAC last time I was home, but that didnt do the trick. She took it to the dealer yesterday and they said it needed new spark plugs (at $9 each), and a new throttle control valve. I've never heard of the throttle control valve or any problems being associated with it. Anyone else out there have any ideas?

I don't have my manual in front of me, but isn't the throttle control valve the same as the IAC? I'll check later unless someone can verify this before I get home tonight.
My 01 used to have the idling problem. Cleaning was a temp fix that lasted a few months. Eventually, I replaced it.

There is a throttle position sensor(TPS) that could be the culprit. That should show up in the engine codes. Have they been pulled, and if so what are they? I doubt if the root cause is the plugs, although they may be fouled at this point.

I had the same thing with my 99 Explorer. It was the o rings on the intake where bad, which caused it to idle rough sometimes stall. The computer trys to compensate and starts running rich and carbons up the iac. I suggest replacing the o rings and cleaning the iac. I did it and it's been about 1k without any problems. Local dealer charged $300
