what is the different

Hi i need some help on motor oil difference between 5w30 or 10w30 for my 1996 ford explorer with the 4.0..under the hood it says 5w30 and the non ford dealership put in 10w30 in before i bought it..plus it has 180,000 km and runs like a dream. i just dont what to worry about how 10w30 cant get fast enough to the vital parts up top like the cam etc. thanks

10W30 will be fine, but 10w40 or higher oils will be like molasses in your Explorer, when cold. In a modern engine, 0W30, 5w30 or 10w30 is all you need. (5w20 for new engines that specifically call for it). Heavier oils (10w40, 15w40, 20w50, 40HD 50HD or 60HD) are fine for worn engines, beaters, thrashers, midnight country road screamers or demolition derby built cars at your County Fair during the summer. Also diesels, which are built with higher tolerances for oil flow. Ed.

My wife had a 1996 Explorer that used 10W-30 oil with 5,000 mile interval changes for most of it's life. And we get cold winters here in northern NJ. Single digit temps and teens are common. Never had a problem with cold starting making ungawdly noises in these temps. She sold the 1996 with 127,000 miles on it. It ran BEAUTIFIFULLY and never had any mechanical problems. It just received normal maintenance. In 1996 the 4.0L V-6 in the Explorer was an old style pushrod engine, a good engine, but not "modern". Newer 4.0L V-6's in Explorers are now SOHC's and will greatly benefit by using a 5W-30 oil for faster start-up flow. You could also use a quality 5W-30 oil year round. Oil quality has improved since 1996.
