carrier axle gears
What exactly does a carrier axle do? Does it have the ability to spin both tires like in mud or does it transfer power from one wheel to the other? I'm confused! Please help.

I think I can give a simple answer to your question..... the carrier housing contains the spider/side gears and the axle splines fit into the ends of the carrier. The carrier assembly then transfers power to one wheel or the other. Unfortunately a standard carrier dumps the power on the wheel with the least traction. A locker carrier has friction plates in it that locks both wheels together for better traction.
