I have 01 super duty ext. cab psd.Got in truck yesterday and drove it and now it has vibration that starts at about 40 and goes away completely at about 60. any ideas. Vibration seem to be going through whole truck! Was driving her a little hard sat. night
Most likely it is the driveshaft center bearing. I experienced the same thing about a month ago, self diagnosed it, and the dealer confirmed it. Had the dealer take care of it (under the extended warranty). Problem solved. Good luck.
don't know if this is you issue...
but mine is starting a little bit of it....
know what it is though, haven't rotated my tires at the required 5000 miles Like I should have and they start cupping on th front if I don't - rotate them front to back and it stops
Well just got back in the house from pulling driveshaft. Center bearing has some play in it,dont know how much is ok if any,u joints seem slightly stiff but not really all that but.But I did notice that when I twist the shafts by the slip yoke that I could feel some play that dont seem right. Also it looks like theres a couple of spots where there might have been weights at one time but not like it just slung them .Two days ago truck rode like a lincoln
How did you know it was the carrier bearing? Mine seems to have excessive play in the rubber bushing. I can move the driveshaft more than 1/2" . Seems excessive.
Just so you know, I am not a mechanic but have repaired my own vehicles since I was 13 or 14 years old and helped out my dad in our garage prior to that. I just used the process of elimination, and previous experiences with all of my other vehicles throughout my years of driving. For example, a front wheel bearing vibration can usually be felt thru the steering or on one side of the vehicle and will usually quiet down when turning. U-joints will usually click (for lack of a better description) while rotating, and the clicking speed will increase and decrease with vehicle speed. Front or rear differential bearings are very easy to figure out by the characteristic of the sounds and vibration they emit. I ruled out the torque converter by manually (tapping the brake pedal while in overdrive, this will “manually” disengage the overdrive) and electronically disengaging the torque converter lock-up (via the OD button on the shift). Also shifting the transmission into a lower gear (at a lower speed) and also into neutral while cruising down the highway (neither of which stopped the vibration). Which lead me to believe it was related to the drive shaft. I have never had nor do I know anyone who’s drive shaft went out of balance, so I did not think it was that. Since the vibration I experienced seemed to resonate through the entire frame, front to rear from underneath I just figured it was the center bearing, after eliminating all of the other things above, it seemed to me to be the most obvious culprit. When I went to the dealers service department, I talked to them about it and after a test drive they confirmed what I thought, repaired it and that was it. They also told me that this was a fairly common problem with this model. Sorry to be long winded, and good luck.
well just got in house from installing driveshaft, truck again rides like a lincoln.took shaft to driveline shop and had it re-done,new u-joints,carrier bearing and balanced.all is well once again. Thanks for the help!!
Last night I did some messing around with the carrier bearing. Seemed like an excessive amount of play in the rubber bushing, so I put a shim between the rubber bushing and the metal bracket to take up some of the slack. Same vibration present, but significantly worse.
The truck goes back to the dealer next Wed. and the Ford field service engineer is going to work on it.
yes, I did consider exactly what you are saying. At 1st, I shimmed under the rubber bushing, between the bracket and the bushing. Made it significantly worse. I did consider the fact that it moved the carrier bearing position up around 1/2". So, I tried the opposite and and shimmed above the bushing, moving the carrier down a bit. Same thing. The vibe was worse.
I think the fix to your truck- carrier, ujoints, etc. is probably my issue too.
One other thing, Does anyone know which way the carrier bearing bracket is supposed to be? One side has a bigger lip/flange in it. I need to know whether that should be toward the front or back.
My truck has 63000 miles on it. Carrier bearing was prolly the worst thing but while its out figured might as well do it right.should be good for a while now.
