Testing gas tank sending unit

I got my 83 F100 home.(It was the free one w/ 81,000 miles) Any ways as it was being loaded on the wrecker I noticed fluid spilling from the rear. I stuck my finger in the puddle and it smelled like gas. Got the truck home and I dropped the tank to see where it was coming from and the tank is shot too many rust holes on the top side. Ordered a replacement but the sending unit looks in sad shape. Does anyone know how to test it or where I can buy a resonably priced unit, Ford wants $97. Also, any ideas on how I can clean my fuel line, I don't have a compressor yet to purge the lines. Any help would be great. I'm logging my work with photos and a journal to keep track of cost and progress. I'll try to update when I can.

Check with an ohm meter something like 10 -70 ohms of resistance from the empty position to the full position that is about all there is to it make sure the pickup tube doesnt have any hols in it.

Something that might work to purge the fuel line is a small hand held vacuum pump like they sell for bleeding your brakes with.

Connect the vacuum pump to the tank side and connect a plastic tube to the engine side. Set the tube in a jar of solvent or gasoline and draw it through with the vacuum pump.
