any new gauges should be in addition to. the factory gauges are all electric.... they work off a tranducer. if you add aftermarket, then they will be in addition to, but you could have problems. it can be difficult to find places to stick sensors in the block. but, i would honestly suggest getting gauges other than the stock ones. you may be able to splice your wires on the new ones into the stock wiring, but it would depend on how they were set up. good luck.
I read somewhere once before about changing senders or something and making the tranny temp and water temp gauges work like a real gauge. You might do a web search and see what you could find,, i tried but didnt come up with anything. Sure would be nice if there was a way..
