eMachines computers. Any good?
When it comes right down to it, there are only 2 brands of CPUs you'll find in computers, AMD and Intel. Think of the CPU as the engine. No matter whether you buy a $3000 Dell or a $399 e-Machine, they have the same brands of CPUs in them. Most other components are made in Taiwan and are pretty reliable.
I wouldn't recommend them for gamers though.

Stay with a name brand computer. IMHO!
I bought my eMachine in 1998. It has never failed me nor have I had to replace any parts. I have used this machine almost every day for an hour or two since I bought it. I have upgraded the memory and disc with generic parts, no problem. I have added on external drives etc no problem as long as they were compatible with Win98. Only troubles I have had is with newer applications and software that have by passed my poor old Celeron 400 and Win98.
I thought it was an excellent machine and like I said never had a problem. My kids still use it and beat the heck out of it, pounding the mouse and keyboard come to mind. Still all original.
I have no idea if their service is good, cause no problems. I have heard that their machines were OK but service was bad, before Gateway.
I believe Gateway bought them a few years back. Don't know how that changed things.
I would buy another if I needed an inexpensive machine with good features at a really low price. But then I think Dell has been moving in on that territory lately.
I have heard bad stories about several of the major brands, like HP, Dell, Gateway and one or two others. This does not mean those brands are bad, just that someone got a lemon, or more likely in my opinion, they picked up a bunch of spyware which will make a PC act like it is a crappy machine. I know from company experience Gateway had some really bad laptops in the 90s, not very rugged.
I curently use Sony Vaios, company provided and they are OK but not as good quality as I had been led to believe. I think next PC I have to buy with my own cash will be either a Dell or HP or even an eMachine if I am looking for bottom dollar.
Just my opinion,
Jim Henderson
