I have a '92 ford extended cab, 5.0. That I have had a problem with the alternator for the past couple of years. It has gone through 2-3 in that time. Now, it runs fine until you pull on the lights then it dies immediately. A friend had me pull the positive side of the battery and it stills runs. But I can't remember what he said to look for? Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks
Removing the battery cables while the engine is running is a bad idea . What brand of alternators are you using ? Does the rectifier plug show any signs of heat damage ?
I would look for a connection problem whether at the battery, the ground connections at the body and the main ground connection from the battery to the frame continuing to the block.
Pulling the positive cable & having the truck still run proves that your alternator is producing electricity. If the truck died without the cable connected, you would be buying a new one (alternator).
Does it die with just parking lights on? What voltage is the alternator putting out (Lights, No Lights, parking lights). Also check volts at the voltage regulator. How about the radio. Is it on & die as well?
Defenetly check the plug to the alternator. Ford had problems on certain year trucks. The plug supposedly was not built heavy enough. I went to a heavier alternator in my truck because of snow plowing. I do notice it drop a little if I have a lot of different assaries running. E.G., Heater, lights, wiper, stereo, etc, all running at once when at a traffic light. Never anything really bad happened though but to answer your question, I did replace my alt approx every year and a half when I first owned the truck.
I would see what the heaviest alt is available at the store before you try an aftermarket high output type. You may also want to try another brand alt from a different parts house. I have done the musical alternator game in the past on my other trucks. Parts houses can come across a bad batch of alts sometimes. Good luck. Jake.
