Hey everyone,I'm thinking of putting in a new cam.I currently have the Edelbrock performer manifold and carb, and read somewhere that they sell a power package that includes what I assume is basically an RV cam. With something like this would I have to replace my pushrods also or will my stock ones be the correct length? Thanks,John
Fords are usually pretty good on the intake side of cylinder head flow, it is the exhaust side that needs help. I would recommend a cam that has a little more lift and duration on the exhaust side than it has on the intake side.
Edelbrock cams are nothing more than a small block chev cam profile (all the testing was done on SBC with the edelbrock intake to get the best combo in THAT engine) that was then ground on a ford cam core, you would really be disappointed in that cam in your engine like torque said look into comp something like the extreme energy or dual energy cams with more duration on the exhaust would be much better suited for your application.
Yes,I know there are other makes, what I'd like to know is-how big before I also have to change push rods.I just put brand new ones in while I had the intake off,and while they are cheap,I'm cheap and would like to be able to use them if possible. Thanks for the info on the exhaust duration,John
You can go with a Crane 901, or 921 powermax. They are dual pattern cams and will not give you any geometry problems but you should check with crane as far as springs. Stock ones will probably be ok unless they are pretty old and if you don't rev the heck out of the engine.
If the cam base circle is stock, and the heads haven't been milled or the block decked, you should be good to go on pushrod length. The only way to know for sure is to check.
Thanks, this is a bone stock engine except for the intake and carb.I'm not real familiar with ford engines in particular as I work mainly on Chrysler products. This truck is a hand me down from my wifes grandpa, and he's told me the only work ever done on it was a recall by Ford where they had to either change the crank or put new bearings on the lower end.I was under the impression that it only had 42000 miles on it but just this weekend found out it had 142000 miles, which threw me for a curve as I've been putting some extras on it,mainly the Edel brock intake and carb.
The pushrods should be OK with most cams, unless you have headwork done.. You have to watch the valve springs if your new cam has a lot of lift. You should use the recommended valve springs for the cam that you select. I don't like the specs on the Edelbrock cam. I would use a Comp Cams 255DEH for a RV application.
