Spark plug removal

For those who have attempted to remove the spark plugs in a 97 and up F-150 knows how difficult it can be. My first attempt was today and it started out okay at first. The first plug on the passenger side came out easy enough. Put the new one in it's place and attempted the second one. For some reason, the socket would not go around the spark plug. It was almost like something was in the hole keeping the socket from seating around it so I could loosen it up. Got my flashlight but it's hard to see all the way down the hole. Couldn't see any trash in the hole, but it almost feels like rubber when I try to press the 5/8's down in there. Very frustrating. Tried another plug on the driver's side and I got the same thing. It's bad enough that they're hard to get to, but when the when you can't get the socket around the plug, that just compounds the problem. Anyone else ever had this problem? It's almost as if the tip of the boot is stuck down in the hole keeping the socket from going around the plug, but the boot looks completely intact.

Thanks.

I've seen small rocks jammed down beside the spark plug making it impossible to get the socket on. I have no idea how they got down there and they sure can be a pain to remove.
