Front axle

I have a 1980 3/4 ton four wheel drive pick-up. I believe this is the first year that Ford, unfortuneatly went with the three piece front axle. I busted both of the yokes just inside of the passesnger side front tire, not to long after I replaced the u-joints on that side. When I did this I was only turning around on a birm in four wheel drive. I don't think I caused this , but I am looking for some help. Is it recomended to convert over to a straight one piece? How easy is this? Will most 1979 3/4 4x4's have a front axle that would fit? A local junk yard has a three piece for sale for three hundred is that a good deal? In conclusion, The toe-in is real bad on my truck, ecspecially when I back up, could that have put a lot of pressure on the axle where the u-joint is or is that bad ball joints. Basically, I think I need a total front end overhaul and I would appreciate any feedback.
