Ipod install

Hello..my first post and eager to learn! I own an 2000 Expedition Eddie Bauer w/ Mach sound system, CD changer in center console. Also own a 1st gen ipod (it does not have the cradle connector option, only a 3.5 output for headphones) I have tried an FM transmitter and the tape/3.5 adapter to use in my Expy...both sound lousy. I did some reading from previous posts and learned about a few products that should be a good value for directly connecting to the factory HU, i.e..blitzsafe and PIE products. I haven't purchased anything yet and am still trying to figure out how I can pull out the HU unit (without buying the tool?) and install these products myself. Any pearls here for a novice? Thanks in advance!

get the tools it will save you from having to take the bezel off, which isn't hard but isn't as easy either. i just bought a pair a walmart for 4 bucks last week and they will be worth that to you. also check out "pac" for the aux interface to, they all work well and have good sound q.(cause they all do it the exact same way) its just a matter of which one you can get for a good price.

I'm not surprised you didn't care for the audio quality of the FM/tape implementations...those are pretty low-fidelity ways to go. If you're considering adaptor products, I'd strongly suggest you look at JL Audio's CleanSweep...in addition to giving you an auxiliary input for the iPod, it provides a multi-channel A-D-A convertor that would let you add an amp to your system (without replacing the HU) should you ever want to do so.

Another alternative is to buy an Alpine HU, or another brand that gives you an aux input. I've used the Alpines for this...the earlier models didn't sound so great, but I bought another one in 2003 and it's much better. Have fun...

also some of the new alpine will actually control an ipod if you get the adapter (100 bucks or so) which works pretty slick, check alpines website for more info www.alpine1.com

Thanks for the info. This forum is a great way to shortcut hours of research and aggravation! I think what I want to do now BUT I still need to get the factory head unit out. I realize I will need to purchase a tool but could not find one at Wal-Mart or Best Buy (even though they had previously stocked it). Does any one know if there is a specific name for this tool or if I can order online anywhere, etc?? Thanks again!
