driveshaft angle after 9" install

Im trying to mount my 9" from a 57f100 and im having troubles with the driveshaft ange. With the axle in and centered(same distance from frame to backing plates on each side) the pinion is a bit to the right of center. The driveshaft looks as if the angle will be to the right a bit.I know a bit is allowed but has anyone else experienced this? Also im mounting the axle above the springs and im getting a 0 to 1 degree reading on my trans output shaft.Does this seem right?
Thanks
Kevin

Kevin,

I don't know much about this issue, but I know where to look to find out how much I don't know.

John Niolon has a great article on this subject on his web site. Here is a link.

SO according to his article, the pinion/tailshaft centerlines dont always line up.As long as they are both the same angles it will be ok.I think i might be ok.The 0-1 degreereading now makes sense. Thanks

This is a better article than John Niolons but it is a long read. Most ford vehicles had the transmission shafts down five degrees and the rear axle pinion about 6.5 degrees because at cruise your rear axle will lower about 2 degrees.

Now Nathan, we need to teach you young folks how to not be so rude. Next time say something like:

"This article has some additional information you might find interesting."

or

"This article complements John's nicely."

or

"This article was written by a real person, not a chimpanzee."

or

Wait ... not that last one. That's something 'fenders would say.

Within a few degrees has always worked just fine for me. Driveshaft balance or a bad U-joint are usually the culprit if you are anywhere close on the angle, and still feel any bad vibes from the shaft.

Earl

I wish I could promise I will never refer to Niolon as a chimpanzee, but you'd probably just pull up a retro thread where I called him something worse.

well, i went ahead and welded the perches on.Im confident that i measure right and the driveshaft angle to the right will be ok.Speaking of the article, I used to be into hardcore rock crawling(had a 74 Bronco) and the driveshaft was at a much, much greater angle with the lift.I guess ill have to wait when i drive when i get the body back on.

Thanks
Kevin

I've been told that 3 degrees is the max to avoid vibration.

guess I need to take up for myself... although it's probably useless with you guys...

I have to agree somewhat with Nathan... If you need to know everything there is to know about single cardon, constant velocity, double cardon, reverse transmogrify and the properties of ectoplasm...well then the other article is better... it certainly gives you the minutia that a engineering type person thrives on... but most of us with F-100s aren't going to be anywhere near the limits of standard issue u-joints so that's why I didn't include all that other info about velocities of rotation and stuff...

I know how easily this group is confused and I was trying to prevent that... I had thought about writing it in crayon...but didn't want to push the point

so you guys ease up on Nathan... he's just trying to be an engineering wannabe... but if he dis's me again I'm gonna swing down from my tree and thrash him with this banana stalk

hey Kev ??? do you ever think that sometimes it isn't worth asking the question ???

later

John (cool but in a minimalist kinda way)

If John is a chimp I don't want him mad at me. Seems that when they get aggravated they attack the genitals and face. On the lighter side I want John to dispel a viscious rumor. Seems he is trashing the MUSII suspension and is going to install a straight axle. Says it reminds him of a gasser. LOL

John we will keep Cole in our prayers as well as his and your family.
