Question engine noise

This is a noob question most likely. Just got an '05 F350 DRW with the 6.0 diesel. This is our first diesel truck. I understand how diesel engines work and how they are in general noisier than gas engines. But what would make one diesel engine quieter or louder than another? The question comes from the feeling that our truck makes a lot more engine noise than others (other Fords and Chevys). I see other forum posts complaining about certain noises being made by the truck. I don't see how I could hear any of those noises over the basic engine noise our truck makes. In direct comparison to a Chevy diesel of similar vintage it sounds significantly louder and has much more diesel "detonation sound" or clatter at low RPM. Does this indicate any kind of problem with the way the engine is tuned?

Second noob question? What happens if you try to start the engine before the glow plug light goes off?

jnusbaum, Welcome, Hope you enjoy the new truck.

Check your oil level. Make sure it is at the 1/2 mark between "MIN" and "MAX".
Make sure you have good fuel. Use Stanadyne, avail at truck stops or off the Internet, Power Service in the white bottle is avail at Walmart.

They are all very noisy when cold.

If you try to start the engine before the glow plug light goes off result will depend on the temperature. If it is too cold, it just won't start. Here it Central Texas, the 50's is cold to me. The truck would start just fine. It might crank a few revolutions more.
