Hi Folks,
We am new here, and hope that some of you can help us in completing our project. My son (15 y/o) and I have purchased a 1982 Bronco, powered by a 351 Windsor. The fuel induction is via a 4 bar Holley Carb. We are novice auto restorers, infact this is our 1st. So far we have learned alot and are having great fun with this.
The Motor is running great, but all the emission systems had been removed by some previous owner or mechanic? Where can we locate a schematic, and diagrams for what should be there in order to meet emission standards to make this truck road worthy????
We look forward to seeing this truck on the road later this year.
Thanks Matt & Mitch
Hi mil1ion,
Thanks for your reply and suggested links to review.
I'm still very confused on how to navigate around this web site????
How do I get back to posting a tread for an introduction??
Where do I find the posting a tread for technical support questions?
I can't seem to find my way around.
On the top left of the page you will see the text:
Ford Truck Enthusiast's Forums > General >Personal........
Those are hyperlinks to FTE's pages.
Clicking the first part of that will take you to the FTE main forum page where all of the forums are listed.
Clicking General will take you to the *General Related Forums*which is made up of 5 or 6 forums.
FTE has TONS of hyperlinks, they are in Blue text and the cursor should turn into a Hand when you put the cursor on them, Left click of the mouse takes you there
Once you find the main forum page it will be easy for you
Mattmitch, welcome to FTE!!! TO answer your question about the emissions, there may be a daigram label at the front of the engine, next to the radiator, on the top of the core support beside the hood latch. You should see it when you open the hood. Assuming this label has been removed, you can find some info in a Haynes or Chilton repair manual. The Haynes manual is called "Ford Pick-ups & Bronco 1980 thru 1996", available for about $20 from any auto parts store. That may help with some of the items you need to replace. Many of the parts for your 82 are now obsolete from Ford, but may still be available from the local parts store. IF an item has been discontinued, they may help find a newer part that can substitute. If you can visit a salvage yard and locate another 82 Bronco or F150, you might be able to see what parts should be there as well as find some to use on your project. WHile my 84 Bronco had all of the parts, most needed replacing after 20 years, and some are rather expensive. It may cost around $1500 or so to replace all of the pollution control items with new parts.
justshootme84, Yes the label was removed from the core support at some point in time. The Haynes manual that I have does have a section on emissions, unfortunately, due to the fact that every part and piece of the emission system was removed; the manuel does'nt help me much. I need a parts list and or schematic diagram of the emission system or I may have to seek out yet another 82 Bronco or 150 with a 351w non fuel injected for comparison.
Keep on truckin, off to the salvage yards!!!
You are on the right track with the search for a truck that hasn't been robbed of its emissions equipment as a point of reference. In spite of the fact that emissions equipment is such an important system, manufacturers and repair manual authors don't seem to see the need to give very detailed diagrams for these systems. The descriptions are usually vague and you get photos of individual components with no information as to where things go from that point. I wish I had a dime for everyone who posted a question similar to yours. Unfortunately, I am better versed in the components for newer model trucks. If you find a truck that you can use for reference, most of us here can certainly explain what the parts do and/or how they are supposed to work. Welcome, hope the site can be as helpful for you as it has been for so many of us.
thanks greystreak92, I'll keep you all up to speed on my emissions search. As mentioned in my original post, my son (15y/o) and I are learning a great deal just tinkering under the hood (and other places) of the project Bronco. We are new to FTE and have already realized the value of networking with folks like yourself. My son is now just returning home from his winter school break vacation and was excited to hear that others have shown interest in our needs and/or woes of truck restorations. He is back out in the garage now with his hands and elbows deep into the Bronco.
We got lots of cleaning up to do 23+ years of junk built up in every corner-crack & quarter panel. Well can't let the kid have all the fun so I'm going out to the garage.
Keep on truckin!
I was looking through a catalog from a Bronco parts supplier, and another point came to mind. There were a few different options on 80-86 Broncos with a 351W, like 2bbl carb, the 84-86 4bbl H.O. like I have, and a California emissions package. When I was replacing these items ,they are specific to the factory option you have and not always interchangeable. This just makes your job more of a challenge, and it would be nice if the HAynes or Chilton had a diagram of where everything is mounted, routing of the lines, etc. but they don't. I have not found any other source, so comparison to a similar vehicle is the only thing I could come up with. There may be some info in the tech articles, or try searching the forum topics, and there are online tech libraries at sites like AutoZone.com that may help. You can view pics of my engine compartment at superford.org to see some of the emission controls on the passngr. side of the engine. IF you need a specific picture of something, I can easily post it over there. You can also contact me thru that site. I'll post a link here if it's allowed. JSM84
Hey there, not trying to steal your post but I am in the same boat as you and your son. I have an '84 Bronco w/ the 2bbl carb. I already paid 140 to try and get Midas to hook up all my emissions systems and carb lines and all but they did a lousy job and I was left with a bunch of vacuum lines with bolts stuck in the end. I can take pictures of what I have hooked up so far and maybe it'll help. I got all the color cordinated lines hooked up, the EGR, PCV and air pumps too. What I am stuck on now are the carb. lines. My carburetor is not doing it's job which is causing me to hit the 1600's in Hydro Carbons when trying to pass emissions. There are 3 lines coming from the FRONT of my carb., one at the top and one on each side on the bottom. If anyone has pictures of where these lines hook to I would greatly appreciate it. I own all the manuals for this truck and all of them have pics of the lines and of the carb. but none show where they attach to...big help. I appreciate any help and I will pass on any info. I find outside of the forums by PM to you mitch. Thanks again.
Matt and Mitch congrads on your new purchases and welcome to FTE. Hope u find your bronco answers and info always . This site is informative and all are eager to help . Time we spend here is a plus to us Ford bronco enthusiasts----- u stated novice ---- i am just merely a parts changer GOOD LUCK TR
