I have a 2001 ford f250 SD with 88k on it. I just washed it today and noticed surface rust coming through the paint on pretty much every body panel. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and if the dealer fixed it. I called the dealer and they said paint is 3 yr 36k warranty, corrosion and rust is 5 yr unlimited mile warranty. They don't know what this rust falls under though.
Maybe all you have is "rail dust". These are small pieces of hot iron that come off trains and automobile brakes. They melt themselves into the clear coat and then they rust. I get rail dust spots all over but mostly around my wheel wells and the doors from my brakes but that stuff comes off. They are black at first and then they turn to rust. My truck was covered with that stuff when I got it. It looked a pinkish white there was so much on it. I also thought my truck was already rusting. See if you can scratch some of them off with your fingernail. If you can, than it isn't body metal surface rust, it's rail dust. You can remove them with a clay bar cleaning kit. I hope that's what it is.
I have a white 2002 F250 which appears to have freckles. I bought the truck used last fall and had the dealer apply a clearcoat. I found this thread on rail dust. Anyone have any other information or advice about this problem?

I just found the paint bubbling on the rear fender yesterday. Today a got up under neath the truck and yep, rust I am going to the dealer tomorrow to see if they will fix it. Did you have any luck with your truck?
I had that "rail dust" problem on my 2003's front/rear chrome bumpers. It showed up after the first winter about 6 months after I bought it. Bunches of tiny little rust spots pretty much all over the bumpers.
I took it into the dealer where I bought it, the tech took digital photos of it and sent them to a Ford office somewhere. I got a call the next day from the dealer telling me to bring it back in next week so they could replace my bumpers.
The service manager told me it was a common problem and Ford looked at the photos, decided it was too many spots to fix and went ahead and replaced them. Pretty good service, I think. No further problems since then almost 3 years later! I've really had good experiences with the sevice depts at the two local Ford dealers I've dealt with. I have had a few minor problems with my F250 and they were very accomadating.
