Adjusting Holley Floats

I was trying to adjust my floats (Holley 390cfm). The documentation says with the engine idling.. to adjust. Well, when I back off the lock nut on the float adjustment, gas shoots everywhere. I had one bad experience with gas, and a hot manifold, don't care to have another. How can one adjust them without catching the truck on fire?

Thanks

If the gasket on the adjusters are new you shouldn't have gas spraying out when you adjust them. It sounds like you are backing the lock nuts out too far.

New gaskets will leak fuel if you loosen them too much! Place the wrench (12 pt.) on the adjuster nut. Back the screw off no more than 1/4 to 3/8 turn this should let the nut turn. You will nee to turn the adjuster nut and lock screw at the same time or it can loosen too much and let fuel leak. I also found (years ago) that clear site plugs are great for float setting without fuel leakage.
