Question squeaky speedometer

Can someone out there tell me how to disconnect the cable from the speedo. There's a plastic clip thingy, I can't get it loose and I'm worried I might break it. Also, what's good to lube it with?

as for the lube, go to an auto parts store and ask for cable grease, it's good stuff. what I did with the olds when it started to squeak was to disconnect it from the cruise control, as it's got 2 speedo cables (one from tranny to cc, one from cc to dash). you could unplug it from the transmission, pull it through the engine bay and hold it up as you drip in the grease...

You need to squeeze the flat tab of the plastic against the cable and it should come out.

Hope you're going through top to disconnect it. If you unbolt and gently pull cluster out a bit, will giive you more room. Regarding lube, Eastwood Company has a tool that attaches to cable and your grease gun. Gets the whole cable.

thanks

Thanks for the tip, I finally got round to it. I pulled the core out, cleaned it, lubed it and put it back together. Low and behold, it don't squeak no more! Now I can hear the rest of the squeaks and rattles. I think some of 'em are me instead of the truck. Later, J.B.
