The bolt pattern is the main thing... Ford changed it in the new trucks. The older series like ours (up to '97) have a 8x6.5 pattern, that is 8 holes on a 6.5 inch circle... the new ones have a 8x170 pattern, or 8 holes on 170 mm circle. They are not the same and not interchangable. 170mm is about 3/16 of an inch bigger than 6.5 inches.
I discovered this when I was trying to find out if I could use cast aluminum wheels off a new superduty on my '95. As everything turned out I was able to purchase brand new from Ford the original deep dish aluminums for the truck for less than I could buy a decent set of aftermarkets. The whole works set me back less than $1200.00 Canadian or $800.00 US including locking nuts and stems... Tires and balancing were above.
I should also add that the center trims on the new wheels will not clear the axle hub on the rear end. If I recall correctly, the older hubs stick out nearly 4 1/4 inches past the aluminum wheels... while the new ones only stick out 2 3/4 inches. clearance in the new center trims is only about 3 1/4 inches... in any case it is not enough to cover the older hubs...
In another post someone said they found adapters if they are thick enough you could possibly get the trim over the hubs...
