While were on the topic, I have some C8ea-H heads for my 390 that have just been completly redone, and now I am wondering about taking the die grinder to the exhaust ports, there is a small hump, on the top of the port about an inch in and the port seems to curve downward toward the end of the port, my thinking is to remove the "Hump" and nip some material off the top of the port at the outside. Any suggestions would be helpfull. I have ported 3 sets of 351 windsor heads in the past so i'm not shy about porting, just want to be making improvements, The 390 is a 9.5:1 getting a performer mani. edel 750 4 bll with a 290/302 (214/224@.50dur).512/.538 lift and cam,4 deg/ adv and 1 and 3/4 headers.
Are you going to blend the bowls (pocket port them)? You can completely remove the bump in the roof of the exhaust ports. Do your heads have the holes in the roof for the air injection?
I wasn't going to touch the intakes or the bowls, I've been warned about doing more harm than good on that side of combustion. and no my heads don't have the blow holes in the ex. port.
Then you can take that bump in the roof completely out and smooth it even with the rest of the roof. As long as you are using polishing (sander) rolls to do the majority of the porting with the exception of taking that bump out, you should be fine. I did some bowl work to my heads (blended them) and polished the combustion chamber, and had did a intake gasket match to the intake port of the heads (didn't touch my intake manifold though). It was time consuming and I wished I would have had more time to mess with them a little. If you have any questions about this just ask. I spent the majority of the time in the exhaust port and the bowls though.
