C-6 Speedo Gear

I posted this on the transmission/drivetrain forum but thought I would post here also since I haven't received a response from that forum yet.

C-6 Speedo Gear

<HR style="COLOR: #666666" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I picked up a 390 and C-6 from a guy that pulled them from a truck he had scrapped. Didn't get the year of the truck 197?

I am trying to find out what year C-6 I have so that I cold get the correct speedo gear assembly/speedo cable for the truck.
The tranny calls for a speedo gear-cable unit (one piece unit)that slides into the housing and is heald on with a retainer screw instead of having the gear assembly threaded onto the housing and having the cable threaded into the assembly.
The tranny has a flanged yolk for the 2 piece drive shaft instead of slip yolk.

The tranny that was in the truck when I got the truck was a 4 wheel drive tranny that was originally set up to drive a divorced transfer case and the tail housing was never set up for a speedo gear so I can't trade out tail shaft housings between the two

Any help would be greatful

Sure you can, if you are adventurous and want to learn the workings of an auto tranny... I just put a C6 in my old truck, it was from a 72 model and had the hole open for a slip in speedo gear. It was a two wheel drive truck and has the flanged yolk as well. I think the slip yolk came later down the year range. For what it's worth, my old (65) four speed had the same u-joint yolk, so I had to use the newer (72) intermediate shaft as it was a little shorter than that used with the four speed. All bolted up nicely...

Mike,
Thanks for the reply.
I will look for a 1972 speedo cable.
What I meant by not being able to trade out the tail shaft assembly was that the tail shaft assembly from the other tranny wouldn't work because it was never assembled with a speedo gear assembly. The tail housing had a blank where the gear would have went.
Thanks, Ken

Ken, You can get the cable and other needed parts, but your (teeth count) gear on the end will have to be determined by your rear ratio, including tire size. I pick up the gears while visiting the salvage yards. Folks pull the tranny and leave them on the end of the cable, or on the ground. 17-20 teeth are very comon and I believe the C6 uses a right twist.

Do you know your ratio and tire size?

John,
Thanks for the reply.
It looks like I need a 17 tooth gear.
I am running 373 gears and 235/85/16 tires(31 inch)
I counted 6 rungs on the gear on the output shaft but I was told by a builder that it is probably 7 turns or teeth as you call it. I can't see the gear but I felt 6 notches on the gear.
I think I found a speedo assembly locally. I will look at it tonight.
I will just need to pick up a gear.
Thanks for all the help,
I knew I would get a better response here than the drive train section.
Thanks,
Ken
