A good friend of mine is purchasing a 2002 Ford Explorer. They are going to pick it up next Tuesday. The car Fax report comes back clean. I've been searching the forums for some info on the reliability of this year. Some info on this one its a 4.0 4x4 with 24k miles on it. Real clean unit, its fairly loaded with leather seats, moon roof, cd disc changer, and the list gos on. Is there any one thing that stands out as potentially being a problem on this year ford explorer? I see a lot of post on axle seals. Do they wear out from regular use or when someone tows with them? They are going to have a family mechanic sheck it out this weekend, but he's not a Ford mechanic. Any input would be Greatly Appreciated. Thanks.
I have a 2002, and it is in the shop for a rear end, timing chain tensioner and noise in the front end. The ford dealer tells me that the rears in that year are junk but they have fixed the problem.
Mine is in the shop now also for the timing chain tensioner, the rear end, and I'll raise you one for the transmission that snapped the third gear intermediate band. Of course my truck has 100,700 miles on it. Perhaps that unit with such low mileage would be best served to also purchase an extended warranty along with it. Just a suggestion...
Depending on the build date, a lot of the 02's were early build dates. I would tell him to call his Ford dealer and run the vin to see if the warranty has expired. As mentioned the timing chain noise is very common and very expensive to fix, the 4x4 modules are known to be junk on earlier build dates (about $250 plus labor), the rear axle seals are common to leak, the earlier build dates also had problems with the gasket in the tranny valve body that if not caught in time caused more substantial problems. Personally, I wouldn't buy one if it was out of warranty unless I could get a repair history from the Ford dealer that showed what problems were addressed.
