I came across two 88 5.0 efi's. First one is from Mk-iv H.O.(H.0. emblem on upper intake plate) with factory short headers. Second engine is in a T-bird (emblem just says 5.0 on plate), no headers, just reg. exhaust manifolds. Both are MAP, both have roller cams. I wanted to buy the first one but found water in cylinder with rust. I also noticed that the pistons were almost flat top. Then I came across the second 5.0. I pulled the intake off and noticed the roller cam. I'm not to familiar to these engines and wanted to swap into an early bronco. My question is are most engines of this years flat tops and are they all roller cams? I thought roller cams only came out with H.O.s???I'm wondering if the second motor would be worth building up as compared to my old 74 302?
thanks for any replies.
Roller cams came on non-HO's too 86 on up. I'd get the heads off the HO and use them for your build-up. I thought the HO's had hyperesthetic pistons....
Actually guys it spelled "Hyper-Eutectic". Hyper meaning "high" and Eutectic meaning "melting point" They are made from a material that is cast at a higher temperature than is normally used in the manufacturing process. The result is a light piston having nearly the same strength as a forged piston combined with the desired hardness and low expansion rates of a typical cast piston.
As for your roller/Ho combination the are as follows:
Vin Code M 82-85 HO/ Non Roller
Vin Code M 85-87 HO/Roller
Vin Code F 85-86 Non HO/Roller
Vin Code N 87-91 Non HO/Non Roller (Truck & Van Motors)
Vin CodeT,E 87-93 HO/Roller (used in T-Birds, Mustangs, Cougars)
Vin Code N 92-96 Non HO/Roller (Truck & Van Motors)
thanks for the info guys. seems most cars 86-up are rollers. are the heads from the HO a better cc than my old 74 (low compression), or is it just a better flowing head?
the heads on the mark 7 are e7 heads and are a good stock heads,in 1993 mustangs they started using the hyper-eutectic pistons, the mark motor has a better upper plenum and cam, true double roller timing chain,85&86 ho's were roller with stock pistons,87 they were forged with valve reliefs.
