Living in MN, in the summer i always try to buy corn or potatoes or such from the stands on the side of the road, it's cheaper and much more fresh and better tasting than buying in the store. In the winter......unfortunately we're stuck to buying from the store.
i live in MN also, and when i can i love buying food from people selling it out of the back of their pickup. they are there to pay their bills, and if my purhase keeps them from being outsold by the big chain food stores for just one more day... i feel good
When they are in season, I will buy from farm stands or at the local farmer's market. Something I have noticed the past few years, the prices at the Farmer's Market are trending up, sometimes equal to or a bit higher than some of the chain markets!
The wise County commissioners in my county has outlawed any and all roadside stands. Now, I have to drive quite a distance to the next county if I want fresh stuff in the summer.
Here in South Jersey, during the summer months we too use the local farmers road side stands. Always soooo much fresher and better tasting. The price is always less than the Supermarkets.
Sadly, in recent years, the roadside stand is becoming the newest dinosaur....What was once farms and open spaces is now developements with cookie cutter homes popping out of the land....Really sad..
Reever---I hear you brother. Although I am the guy who is finding them their land to build these homes (usually stick with the higher end guys at least), I know what you mean. Route 73 in Winslow has a bunch, and Route 70 going into Southampton has a pair on the side of the road too. There's also a little Italian guy on the Black Horse Pike near Blackwood. Gloucester County has a bunch too.
Now for the South Jersey rumble......everybody knows that Jersey Silver Sweet and Jersey Tomatoes are the best things you can find at any roadside farm market.
My dear departed Italian grandfather made most of his income selling his fruit directly in front of his farmhouse. The grocery chains wouldnt pay much. The best stuff was sold out front, the rest went to Safeway.
Around here there arn't that many mostly Dark Fired Tobacco here, but by my grandparents house there every where. they don't have a grocery store in town they have to go to the city. I always remember that corn that my grandma got was from road side stands mom to best corn i ever had.
All i'm gonna say;
