I have a 1979 F250 Ranger XLT 4x4. It has a Dana 44 front and Dana 60 rear both with 3.54 gears and open differentials. I want to put a Dana 60 up front and Dana 60 with limited slip in the rear. I also want to change my ring and pinion to at least a 4.10 (4.56 preferably). What years would work in my truck? Could I bolt on a mid 90's dana 60 front and rear. Would I run into steering assembly issues up front? I know in the rear I could just change my diff. and gears, but I would like to bolt on a ready made assembly if possible. Any help would be much appreciated.
you would be better off with a 78-79 dana 60 front, it bolts right in, you will need the spring plates with the axle, the 44's plates you have are smaller.
as for the rear, i got an 88 ford 10 1/4, it will bolt in too, the u-joint was a 1330 so that might be the same as your 79, to me it is a better rear than most 60's, all 10 1/4's have 1.5" 35 spline axles and the drums pull off without removing bearings, plus its newer so less wear. a 60 rear will need to be from a two wheel drive or a late 77-79 4x4. I hope i didnt forget anything

The later D60 front axles will not fit your truck as the spring perch on the driver's side is cast into the pumpkin and they're wider than the 78/79 trucks. For a direct replacement you'll need a 78 or 79 D60 front axle. As was mentioned you won't need to replace the rear axle, just carrier and gears. If you do change the rear axle those spring perches can be moved quite easily if need be.
