towingadvice/tranny cooling with 00 F250SD V8
Hello all
This forum is very helpful and I have learned much from it.
I have a 2000 5.4L F250SD with the 3.73 gears and will be starting to pull a 3500lb car with open trailer (approx. 5500 lbs total) across a few states. I have learned that I should install an aux. tranny cooler - correct? I don't think that whatever the factory installed will be enough (i have the Ford class 5 hitch, but no towing package) based on the original window sticker.
What else can be recommended (electric trailer brake control is already installed). The truck has 177K but runs excellent still. All fluids have been changed regularly and the truck has had no mechanical issues. Any pre-trip advice would be great as I don't want to get stranded along the way.
Thank you for your time and advice.
Rami

Welcome to the site!
I think all Super Duty trucks come with the "tow pkg" as standard equipment. Look into the grille and see if you can locate a small radiator... that'll be the tranny cooler.
For your trip, take along some water (for the truck), a quart or two of oil & tranny fluid. Also grab a few basic tools. Also, make sure your spare is in good shape and that your jack will work for both the truck & trailer.
