I am thinking about purchasing a down firing subwoofer box due to space restirtions in my cargo area in my 04 eb expy and I was wondering what are the pros and cons of this type of enclosure?
I have 2 10's under the rear bench of my supercab f150 firing down. I sounds good and deep, but the sound doesn't make it out of the cab as much. This is fine for me, but if you wan't the whole block to hear you comming, it's not the way to go.
i just built two downfire boxes to go under the 2nd row seat of my 02 explorer xlt, loaded them with a puch stage 1 8" in each and i have to say i was pleasantly suprised at the sound from such a small set of speakers. but like triton said the sound doesn't leave the cab much. just my $.02. hope this helps.
I have two 8's in the center console that are down firing, really like it, fills the cab pretty evenly, and as stated before, protects to cones as well.
I believe that the downfire richocets the bass giving a more solid sound, the front fire subs will give you a deeper bass but the down will shake the auto more.
I think that down firing enclosures, creates a more full sound to the bass. Kind of gives a little resonance in the cab or something, I don't know how to explain in. I have mine firing away from me in my Bronco II, and it's sounds the best for me, I mounted them all sorts of different ways, trying to find what fits best for me. But for each different vehicle it's different.
how far away from the ground should the subs be? i have a 2000 ranger and need to fit something in 6 inches of space vertically, so i can use the back seats. this leaves me like 1.5 - 2 inches. is that enough?

As long as the sub has enough space to move freely without making contact with the floor at full excursion. 2" should be enough, unless you have subs with the really thick surrounds or "long throw" subs. There are special subs (premier for example) that are for tight places, but they are kinda pricey.
If I used the thin subs from Blaupunkt and put them under my bench seat what kind of box would I need? I have very limited room and I believe the subs recommended a 1 cubic Ft enclosure. They do say they are open air capable but I don't think they will sound very good without a box. Can the box be made in any shape as long as its 1 cubic Ft.? Because, for my application I would need a long narrow box as in really narrow. I have a total of about 3-4" of vertical height. Any suggestions?
